About my Icons

These icons are written in the ancient Russian-Byzantine style of icon-writing. The term “written” is used because the icon is the Gospel in the language of light, color, image and symbol.  Only natural materials are used: a wood panel gessoed with natural ground, genuine gold leaf applied by the bole method, egg tempera using mineral pigments, and linseed oil.

A multi-step process (22 steps in all) is used. The succession of steps is concrete and definite, with particular attention given to iconographic canon and principles which were handed down through the ages.  These icons are not the individual creative expression of one artist, but rather the collective result of prayer, meditation, and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, having been originally developed centuries ago within the monastic setting.
